The Significance of Animals in Our Dreams: Uncovering Their Purpose

Although I’ve been working with dreams for over a decade, I find myself continually learning and reading about dreamwork. Carl Jung, undoubtedly the most prominent figure in this field in our times, remains an essential reference. His interpretation of dreams where animals chase you is particularly intriguing and offers deep insights into one’s psyche. On the other hand, Wilhem Wundt, a German Psychologist didnt believe dreams to be more than just physiological phenomenon that continued on working on what we experienced in the day. And Antonio Blay who didnt really focused any of his pre-Transpersonal Psychology teachings on dreams, he did believe dreams were an avenue for personal grwoth and self-understanding. Blay emphasized the importance of including dreams into one’s personal development and clearly understood that in our dreams we could receive messengers about the unintegrated experiences which have potential for resolving our paint/ suffering.

In my approach, I combine my own insights with teachings from Jung, Steiner, Wilhelm, Blay and other notable scholars in the field.

Here’s an exploration on Animals and What They Could Mean in our Dreams:

  1. Confrontation with the Shadow:

    • Being chased by an animal often symbolizes a confrontation with your shadow self.
    • The shadow represents aspects of yourself that you’ve repressed or are unwilling to acknowledge.
  2. Unintegrated Instincts:

    • The chasing animal may represent instinctual drives or emotions you’re avoiding or suppressing in waking life.
    • This could include sexuality, aggression, or other primal urges.
  3. Fear of the Unconscious:

    • The chase can symbolize your fear of confronting unconscious aspects of yourself.
    • It may indicate resistance to personal growth or change.
  4. Neglected Aspects of Self:

    • The animal might represent a part of your personality that needs attention or integration.
    • Running from it suggests avoidance of these aspects.
  5. Type of Animal Matters:

    • The specific animal chasing you is significant – the qualities the animal represents is key for deeper analysis.
    • For example, a wolf might represent aggression or wildness, while a snake could symbolize transformation or hidden wisdom.
  6. Compensation:

    • The dream may be compensating for an overly controlled or civilized conscious attitude.
    • It’s urging you to reconnect with your instinctual nature.
  7. Call for Integration:

    • Being chased suggests these aspects are demanding attention and integration into your conscious life.
    • The dream is often a call to stop running and face these parts of yourself.
  8. Transformation Opportunity:

    • If you can stop running and confront the animal, it often leads to profound transformation in the dream and in waking life.
  9. Collective Unconscious:

    • Some animal chase dreams might tap into archetypal fears or instincts from the collective unconscious.
  • Personal Context:

    • You would also want to reflect on your personal / cultural / spiritual associations with the animal and the emotions felt during the chase.
  • Recurring Dreams:

    • If this is a recurring dream, then we know this is a persistent message from the unconscious that needs addressing.

What Approach Could You Take to Work Through these Dreams?

  1. Face the Animal: In waking life, reflect on what the chasing animal might represent.
  2. Dialogue with the Animal: Use active imagination to have a conversation with the dream animal.
  3. Integrate the Energy: Consider how to positively incorporate the animal’s qualities into your life.
  4. Examine Avoidance: Reflect on what aspects of yourself or your life you might be avoiding.
  5. Seek Balance: Look for ways to balance your instinctual nature with your conscious, civilized self.

Its important to remember that all we do in this process is to integrate what hasnt been integrated before. We are not conquering anyone but the process of integration. In this case, the goal is not to defeat or escape the chasing animal, but to understand and incorporate what it represents.

How can I identify the qualities of the animal that I need to integrate?

Identifying the qualities of a dream animal that you need to integrate is a thoughtful and introspective process.

Here are some strategies to help you recognize these qualities:

  1. Emotional Response:
    • Reflect on your emotional reaction to the animal in the dream
    • Your feelings can indicate what aspects of yourself you’re struggling with
  2. Animal Characteristics:
    • List the typical traits associated with the animal
    • Consider both positive and negative attributes
  3. Personal Associations:
    • Explore your personal experiences and feelings about this animal
    • These can differ from general symbolism and are often more relevant
  4. Contrast with Self-Image:
    • Compare the animal’s qualities to how you see yourself
    • Qualities that contrast sharply might be ones you need to integrate
  5. Cultural Symbolism:
    • Research the animal’s symbolism in your culture and others
    • This can provide additional insights into potential meanings
  6. Behavior in the Dream:
    • Analyze how the animal acted in your dream
    • Its actions might represent behaviors or tendencies you’re avoiding
  7. Context of Your Life:
    • Consider current challenges or situations in your life
    • The animal’s qualities might relate to what you need to address these
  8. Physical Attributes:
    • Note the animal’s physical characteristics (size, color, etc.)
    • These can symbolize the strength or nature of the quality to integrate
  9. Intuitive Feeling:
    • Trust your gut feeling about what the animal represents
    • Often, your intuition can guide you to accurate interpretations
  • Recurring Themes:
    • If this animal appears in multiple dreams, look for patterns
    • Consistent themes can indicate persistent qualities needing integration
  • Shadow Exploration:
    • Consider if the animal represents qualities you admire but don’t express
    • Or qualities you dislike in others but may possess yourself
  • Journaling:
    • Write freely about the animal and see what insights emerge
    • This can reveal subconscious associations
  • Amplification:
    • Explore myths, stories, or sayings about the animal
    • These can provide deeper symbolic meanings
  • Dialogue with the Animal:
    • In your imagination, ask the animal what it represents
    • This active imagination technique can yield surprising insights
  • Physical Sensations:
    • Notice any bodily reactions when thinking about the animal
    • These can provide clues about its emotional significance
  • Opposite Qualities:
    • Consider qualities opposite to the animal’s
    • Sometimes we need to integrate qualities we’re overdeveloping
  • Life Stage Analysis:
    • Reflect on your current life stage and its challenges
    • The animal might represent qualities needed for personal growth

Remember, the goal is not just to intellectually understand the animal’s symbolism, but to recognize how its qualities can be meaningfully integrated into your life. This often involves embracing aspects of yourself that you’ve been avoiding or undervaluing.
